15 years ago if I remember right, I was told that Mapleshade recordings were an Audiophile's dream come true. Why am I the 1st to write about this CD? Soundwise the CD does sound different then other Jazz recordings such as "Blue Notes" or "ECM". The background instruments sound way back stage while Monica Worth is way upfront. I am not use to this set up, it sounds disconnected yet it does have a certain clarity. The inside CD booklet lists all the technical details on how & why it was recorded in this way. The other musicians are Larry Willis on piano, Keter Betts on bass, Janice Martin on solo violin with the Rick Schmidt Quintet of strings. All the songs are Jazz standards with a few Rock ballads: Shall We Dance, Lazy Afternoon, I'm Going Out Of Head For You, to name a few. Mapleshade states that Monice Worth sings like Rosemary Clooney & Morganna King yet to my ears she is lacking something. I believe I know what it is: Mapleshape built the band around her & she sounds like she is singing by herself with a lack of connection. Her alto is forced & her high notes have a strange vibrato. There is better Jazz out there, a rating of 3 is given for the good playing ability.
